Q

I. RETREATS

Will your retreat provide me with an authentic ayahuasca experience?

Our retreats do provide genuine and powerful ayahuasca experiences. The ceremonies are led by an experienced and respected Shipibo shaman, who prepares and serves his own ayahuasca brew using Chacruna leaves and Ayahuasca vine, following traditional practices.

While our retreats offer luxurious settings, it is important to underline that traditional ayahuasca experiences did not take place in retreat centers. In the past, individuals would visit the shamans in their own homes, partake in the ceremony in a simple and austere environment, spend the night in the ceremonial space, and return home the next day. Retreat centers, on the other hand, have emerged in response to the growing trend of ayahuasca tourism and cater to the needs of Western participants. In that sense, there is no “authentic” Ayahuasca retreat.

We believe that the shaman’s expertise and the quality of the medicine are the most important factors in an ayahuasca experience. Therefore, the ayahuasca experience we offer is authentic, focusing on the skills of our shaman and the quality of the medicine, while providing a comfortable and luxurious environment as an additional aspect of the overall experience.

I. RETREATS

Is taking ayahuasca in the jungle better than taking ayahuasca in the mountains?

In our experience, the power and effectiveness of Ayahuasca are not determined by the specific place of consumption. Rather, what primarily influences the Ayahuasca experience is the immediate setting, the quality of the plants used, your diet, your mindset, and the expertise of the shaman facilitating the ceremony. While some individuals argue that participating in a ceremony in the jungle, where the plants used in the brew naturally grow, may have certain advantages, it is important to note that the core Ayahuasca experience remains unchanged.

In our retreat, we offer a unique opportunity to connect with the sacredness of the mountains and benefit from their anchoring energy. While the transformative potential of Ayahuasca is not dependent on the natural environment, being surrounded by the majestic mountains adds an additional layer of spiritual connection and grounding to your journey. The breathtaking beauty and serene atmosphere of our retreat location provide a tranquil and supportive setting for your Ayahuasca experience.

Furthermore, it goes without saying that the luxurious experience we offer is on another level compared to the roughness of a jungle retreat. We believe that the comfort and amenities provided in our retreat contribute to your overall well-being and allow you to fully focus on your personal growth and healing. Our retreat offers a harmonious blend of refined accommodations, world-class facilities, and the profound spiritual journey that Ayahuasca provides.

While the environment and the level of luxury may differ from other retreats, we maintain that the essential nature of the Ayahuasca experience remains consistent. The transformative potential lies in the quality of the plants, the mindset and intentions of the participants, and the guidance of the skilled shaman and facilitators. At our retreat, we prioritize these crucial elements while providing a unique connection to the mountains and an elevated level of comfort and luxury for a truly unforgettable Ayahuasca experience.

What are the benefits of participating in an ayahuasca retreat?

Participating in an ayahuasca retreat can offer a range of potential benefits, although individual experiences may vary. Coupled with a supportive healing framework, common benefits associated with participating in an ayahuasca retreat include:

1. Self-discovery and personal growth: Ayahuasca can facilitate deep introspection and self-reflection, allowing participants to gain insights into their thoughts, emotions, and patterns of behavior. This heightened self-awareness can support personal growth, helping individuals break free from negative patterns, make positive changes, and develop a stronger sense of self.

2. Emotional healing and trauma resolution: Ayahuasca has been reported to help individuals process and heal from emotional trauma, including past traumas that may be impacting their well-being. The medicine can bring repressed emotions to the surface, providing an opportunity for release, understanding, and healing.

3. Spiritual exploration and connection: Ayahuasca has long been used as a sacrament in spiritual and shamanic practices. Many participants report experiencing a profound sense of connection to something greater than themselves, whether it be nature, the universe, or a higher power. This can lead to spiritual insights, a deeper understanding of one’s purpose, and a greater connection to the spiritual realm.

4. Expanded consciousness and insights: Ayahuasca can induce altered states of consciousness, opening the door to profound insights, visions, and expanded awareness. Participants may gain new perspectives on their lives, relationships, and the nature of reality. These insights can be transformative, leading to shifts in perception and a broader understanding of oneself and the world.

5. Healing and release of physical ailments: relief from physical ailments or chronic conditions after working with ayahuasca has been experienced by many. The plant medicine has the potential to address the underlying energetic or emotional imbalances that contribute to physical symptoms, although it’s important to note that individual experiences can vary.

6. Increased mindfulness and presence: Ayahuasca ceremonies often require participants to be fully present and engage in deep introspection. This can lead to an increased sense of mindfulness and presence, allowing individuals to cultivate a greater appreciation for the present moment and develop a more mindful approach to life.

7. Community and support: Ayahuasca retreats often provide a supportive community of individuals on a similar journey. This sense of community can offer a safe space for sharing experiences, receiving guidance, and building connections with like-minded people who understand and support the ayahuasca process.

I. RETREATS

Why do your retreats last 12 days? Could they be shorter?

At our retreats, our foremost focus is on facilitating profound healing and deep transformation. We firmly believe that such processes require dedicated time and commitment. While there may be numerous opportunities to participate in shorter retreats elsewhere, we are confident that our retreats are truly worth the investment of your time and energy.

Opting for retreats spanning three to eight days may seem convenient for those with time constraints, but it is important to note that the results may not be as impactful. In contrast, our retreats not only provide a well-structured schedule featuring six ayahuasca ceremonies, holistic healing activities and workshops, but they also allow ample time for integration of the experiences. Furthermore, our retreats promote a supportive environment that encourages meaningful connections with fellow participants. As with many things in life, your level of commitment will influence the outcome.

That being said, while we do not recommend it, leaving the retreat 1-2 days earlier could be arranged.

I. RETREATS

Are there any legal or ethical concerns associated with ayahuasca retreats?

While there are no legal concerns related to the consumption of ayahuasca in Peru, there may be ethical concerns with retreats and how they are run.

A good retreat center should prioritize the participant’s safety and well-being. This includes providing a supportive and controlled environment, ensuring the participant’s physical and mental integrity, conducting thorough participant screening to ensure suitability, and having experienced and trained facilitators who can guide and assist participants throughout the retreat process.

Retreat centers should provide clear and comprehensive information to participants about the potential risks, benefits, and effects of ayahuasca. Informed consent is essential, ensuring that participants understand the nature of the experience and the responsibilities involved. Retreat centers should also be transparent about their practices, including the qualifications and experience of their facilitators and adherence to safety protocols.

Integration support and aftercare: Ethical retreat centers prioritize the integration process and offer support and resources to participants after the retreat. Integration is crucial for making sense of the experiences, incorporating insights into daily life, and addressing any challenges that may arise. Centers should provide access to integration resources, such as counseling, integration circles, or referrals to mental health professionals if needed.

I. RETREATS

May I skip a scheduled activity?

Certainly. The daily schedule we provide is intended as a helpful guide to optimize the benefits of the retreat. We encourage all participants to follow the schedule, but we also understand that everyone’s needs and preferences vary. If you feel the need to skip an activity or modify your participation, that is entirely acceptable and respected by us. Your well-being and comfort during the retreat are of utmost importance, and we support you in tailoring your experience to suit your individual journey.

I. RETREATS

May I skip a ceremony? May I sit in a ceremony without drinking?

We understand and honor the diverse needs and preferences of our participants. Taking the time for rest and integration is vital for the healing process, and we fully support individual choices regarding the consumption of the medicine. Whether you choose to enjoy much-needed rest, focus on integrating previous experiences, or decide not to drink the medicine for any reason, your autonomy and well-being are always respected and prioritized in our retreats. Your journey is unique, and we are here to provide a safe and supportive environment that accommodates your individual needs.

I. RETREATS

Are there any long-term effects of participating in ayahuasca retreats?

The long-term effects of participating in ayahuasca retreats can vary among individuals and depend on various factors, including individual characteristics, intentions, preparation, integration, and ongoing personal development. Here are some potential long-term effects that have been reported by participants, but it’s important to note that individual experiences can differ:

Personal growth and self-awareness: Many individuals report long-term positive changes in their lives after participating in ayahuasca retreats. These may include increased self-awareness, enhanced clarity of purpose, improved emotional well-being, and a greater sense of personal growth and development.

Spiritual exploration and connection: Ayahuasca can lead to long-lasting shifts in spiritual awareness and connection. Participants may experience a deepened sense of connection to nature, a higher power, or a broader spiritual understanding. This can contribute to ongoing spiritual exploration and personal development.

Emotional healing and trauma resolution: Ayahuasca has the potential to facilitate long-term emotional healing and resolution of past traumas. Participants may continue to experience positive effects on their emotional well-being, such as reduced symptoms of depression, anxiety, or post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in the long run.

Changes in behavior and lifestyle: Ayahuasca retreats can catalyze transformative changes in behavior and lifestyle. Participants may feel motivated to make healthier choices, such as adopting a more balanced diet, engaging in regular exercise, or cultivating positive relationships. The insights gained from ayahuasca experiences can inform ongoing personal development and lead to sustained positive changes.

Increased mindfulness and presence: Ayahuasca retreats often foster a heightened sense of mindfulness and presence in participants. This increased awareness can extend beyond the retreat experience, leading to a continued practice of mindfulness, gratitude, and living in the present moment.

Integration of insights and lessons: The integration process following an ayahuasca retreat is crucial for long-term effects. By actively working to integrate the insights, lessons, and experiences gained during the retreat into daily life, participants may experience a deeper and more sustained impact from their ayahuasca journeys.

Continued exploration and integration work: Ayahuasca retreats can serve as catalysts for ongoing exploration and integration work. Participants may engage in practices such as meditation, journaling, therapy, or continued participation in spiritual or personal development activities to further integrate and build upon their ayahuasca experiences.

It’s important to recognize that individual experiences can differ, and not all long-term effects are positive or immediate. Some individuals may face challenges or emotional upheaval during the integration process, requiring ongoing support and guidance. It is recommended to approach ayahuasca retreats with proper preparation, responsible guidance, and a commitment to personal growth and well-being. At Ayahuasca Lux, we prioritize the integration process and its preparation to enhance your chances of success, both during and after the retreat.

I. RETREATS

What type of people attend your retreats?

We typically attract guests that are adventurous, open-minded, inquisitive, smart and interested in spirituality and self-growth.

I. RETREATS

How can I integrate the experiences and insights gained from an ayahuasca retreat into my daily life?

We place great importance on the integration of your ayahuasca experience. To support you in this process, we provide various resources and services.

Both our retreat leader and psychotherapist possess extensive knowledge and expertise in ayahuasca integration, ensuring you receive comprehensive guidance and assistance during this crucial phase of your journey.

I. RETREATS

Will I be able to go back to my daily activities as normal?

Absolutely. However, we highly recommend allowing yourself ample time off after the retreat. This period is crucial for effectively integrating the transformative journey you will have experienced. Taking this time to gradually return to the demands of your daily life will aid in the smooth and meaningful incorporation of your Ayahuasca experience.

I. RETREATS

Do you offer San Pedro alongside Ayahuasca?

We have made a conscious decision to focus solely on the master plant Ayahuasca during our retreats. We firmly believe that it is important not to mix different master plants within a short timeframe, as this could potentially counteract the intended effects of Ayahuasca. Many shamans share the belief that combining different master teacher plants is not recommended on an energetic and spiritual level.

However, if you are still interested in exploring San Pedro (otherwise known as Huachuma), we can provide guidance and connect you with reputable individuals who specialize in San Pedro ceremonies after your retreat concludes. This way, you can have a separate and dedicated experience with San Pedro, allowing for a more focused and authentic encounter with each individual plant medicine.

We prioritize your well-being and respect the traditions surrounding these powerful plant medicines, ensuring that your journey with Ayahuasca remains undiluted and profound. By offering you the option to explore San Pedro in a separate context, we aim to support your spiritual exploration while maintaining the integrity and effectiveness of your Ayahuasca experience.

II. ACCOMMODATION

II. ACCOMMODATION

What happens if I choose a shared accommodation while traveling alone?

When choosing to share a suite, you will be paired with another guest of the same gender. Kindly note that you cannot choose the room you may want when selecting the “shared” option.

In case you are attending the retreat with a partner or a friend, please let us know upon booking and we will make sure to book you together in the room of your choice, depending on availability.

II. ACCOMMODATION

How do I let you know about my accommodation preferences?

You will be able to let us know about your accommodation preferences when filling out the booking form.

II. ACCOMMODATION

May I use my mobile phone during the retreat? Is there Wi-Fi available?

You’ll have the option to use your mobile phone, and Wi-Fi is available if needed. Nevertheless, we highly recommend taking a hiatus from digital networks. Our retreats offer an ideal chance to disconnect from mobile phones and laptops, dedicating more time to self-reflection and nurturing your ayahuasca experiences for maximum benefit.

III. AYAHUASCA

What is Ayahuasca?

Ayahuasca is a psychoactive plant medicine that has been used for centuries by indigenous cultures in the Amazon rainforest. It is a powerful brew made from two main ingredients: the Ayahuasca vine (Banisteriopsis caapi) and the leaves of the Chacruna plant (Psychotria viridis) or other plants containing the psychoactive compound DMT (N,N-Dimethyltryptamine).

When these two plants are combined and brewed together, the Ayahuasca vine acts as a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI), allowing the DMT in the Chacruna leaves to be orally active. This combination produces a potent entheogenic brew that is traditionally used in ceremonial settings for spiritual, healing, and transformative purposes.

Ayahuasca is known for inducing powerful visionary experiences, deep introspection, and emotional healing. It is often described as a teacher plant or a spiritual ally that can provide insights into one’s life, past traumas, and personal growth. Ayahuasca ceremonies are typically facilitated by experienced shamans or ayahuasqueros who guide participants through the journey, providing support and guidance throughout the process.

It’s important to note that Ayahuasca is a potent psychoactive substance and should be approached with respect and caution. It is recommended to participate in Ayahuasca ceremonies under the supervision of experienced practitioners in a safe and supportive environment.

II. ACCOMMODATION

What conditions can ayahuasca help with?

Ayahuasca can facilitate the healing of anxiety, depression, PTSD, traumas and addiction.

III. AYAHUASCA

Can ayahuasca help with specific mental health conditions?

Ayahuasca has shown potential in helping individuals with certain mental health conditions, but it is important to note that research is still limited, and individual experiences can vary. The effects of ayahuasca on mental health are complex and multifaceted

Depression: Ayahuasca has antidepressant effects. The psychedelic experience induced by ayahuasca can lead to increased emotional processing, introspection, and the release of repressed emotions. This, in turn, may provide relief from symptoms of depression.

Anxiety: Ayahuasca has been reported to have anxiolytic properties, potentially reducing symptoms of anxiety. The altered state of consciousness and the insights gained during an ayahuasca experience can help individuals confront and process underlying anxieties and fears. However, caution should be exercised, as the intensity of the ayahuasca experience may also trigger anxiety in some individuals.

PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder): Ayahuasca-assisted therapy has shown promise as a potential treatment for PTSD. The psychedelic experience combined with therapeutic support may help individuals process and heal from traumatic experiences. Some research suggests that ayahuasca may reduce PTSD symptoms and improve overall well-being.

Addiction: Ayahuasca has been explored as a potential tool for addiction treatment. It is believed to work by promoting self-reflection, increasing insight into the root causes of addiction, and enhancing motivation for change. Some individuals have reported reduced cravings and increased readiness for recovery after ayahuasca experiences.

Existential distress and spiritual well-being: Ayahuasca has been used for centuries in spiritual and shamanic practices, in order to facilitate spiritual exploration and enhance existential well-being. Individuals experiencing existential distress or seeking a deeper connection to their spirituality may find value in ayahuasca experiences, where they can gain insights and a sense of meaning and purpose.

Aside from mental health conditions, ayahuasca can be a great tool for life advancement, providing insights into every area of life.

III. AYAHUASCA

I have no specific health or well-being condition to address, may I still attend the retreat?

If your intention is self-growth, then yes. Ayahuasca can provide life-changing insights and shape new perspectives into all areas of your life.

III. AYAHUASCA

What should I expect while under the influence of the medicine?

Expect the unexpected, or even better, have no expectations.

Each ayahuasca ceremony differs significantly from the next. The experience may encompass visions, energy, and profound insights. On the other hand, you might encounter a cleansing experience, either energetically or through purging. Depending on your diet, preparation, and lifestyle, it’s common not to experience visions in the first couple of ceremonies, but instead undergo a purifying process where ayahuasca clears energetic blockages and toxins from your body. Vomiting is likely, especially in the initial ceremonies, and it may persist depending on what needs cleansing and healing. Insights about the reasons for vomiting are also typical.

Regardless, the medicine always operates on the psycho-physical and energetic levels, whether visions occur or not. Healing invariably takes place at some level or another.

Visions during ayahuasca can encompass anything, from personal life events to images of otherworldly realms, outer space, unfamiliar places, animals, entities, and alternate realities and dimensions.

Emotions and feelings traverse the entire spectrum of human experience but often become intensified to a whole new level. You might encounter deep sadness, immense joy, fear, profound admiration, surprise, awe, curiosity, laughter, regret, compassion, anger, annoyance, boredom, pride, guilt, ecstasy, excitement, anxiety, affection, love, confusion, or happiness in ways that go beyond the ordinary.

To get the most out of the experience, it is important to trust yourself and the medicine, surrender and approach the experience with humility, while letting go of all resistance.

It is normal to feel nervous or apprehensive before a ceremony. We usually serve a smaller dose for the first ceremony, for you to build confidence. Dosage in following ceremonies can be adjusted according to your needs.

III. AYAHUASCA

What about bad trips?

So-called bad trips only happen when there is resistance and a willingness to control, whether emotionally or rationally, the experience from the participant. The experience may be difficult and fear-inducing, but as long as the participant does not resist it or struggle against it, it will not turn into a “bad” trip.

Acceptance and letting go are the antidote to difficult experiences, just as they are in life.

III. AYAHUASCA

What happens during ceremonies?

During the ceremony, participants will find comfort on soft mattresses and pillows, either sitting or lying down. Prior to the ceremony, the shaman may engage in a brief exchange of words with the participants. Once the ceremony is ready to start, the shaman performs a blessing of the brew and safeguards the ceremonial space. Subsequently, each participant is individually called forward to receive the brew in a small glass. As everyone partakes in the medicine, the room gradually darkens, creating an atmosphere of quiet anticipation for the onset of the effects.

After approximately 30 to 40 minutes, the shaman begins to sing healing songs known as Icaros. These sacred melodies guide the participants’ journey and set a healing intention. The shaman may also offer individual healing to each participant by singing directly to them.

If a participant wishes to consume more medicine, they can gently request it during this time. Following a period of around 3 hours or more, the shaman typically concludes the ceremony, signifying its closure.

III. AYAHUASCA

What is the role of the shaman in an ayahuasca retreat?

The shaman leads the ayahuasca ceremonies, creating a sacred and safe space for participants to undergo their journeys with the medicine. They set the energetic and spiritual tone of the ceremony, establish rituals, and hold the space for participants’ healing and transformation.

The shaman acts as a spiritual guide, drawing on their deep knowledge and experience with ayahuasca and other traditional healing practices. They provide guidance, wisdom, and support to participants as they navigate their journeys, helping them interpret their experiences and understand the messages and insights that arise.

The shaman sings sacred songs known as Icaros during the ceremonies. Icaros are calls to healing spirits. These melodies are considered an integral part of the healing process, as they help create a supportive and energetic container for participants’ experiences. Icaros can guide, protect, and facilitate healing on emotional, spiritual, and energetic levels.

The shaman offers individual healing to participants during the ceremony. They may sit in front of each participant, performing energetic or physical healing techniques, such as blowing tobacco smoke, and singing directly to the person. This individualized attention aims to address specific needs, clear energetic blockages, and support participants in their healing process.

The shaman’s presence and actions serve to protect and cleanse the ceremonial space. They may employ various traditional tools, such as tobacco smoke, floral baths, or specific rituals, to ensure the environment remains energetically clear and safe throughout the ceremony.

Beyond the ceremonies, the shaman often provides integration support to participants. Integration involves making sense of the ayahuasca experiences and applying the insights gained into daily life. The shaman may offer guidance, counseling, or tools for integration, helping participants navigate the post-retreat period and continue their healing and growth

III. AYAHUASCA

Is it better to have taken other psychedelics before trying Ayahuasca?

Other psychedelics may offer some familiarity with altered states of consciousness, but no substance can truly ready you for ayahuasca, as it operates uniquely in its own way.

The most crucial preparation lies in your mindset, diet, and lifestyle, with mindset being paramount. In this regard, the following elements heighten the likelihood of a safe ayahuasca experience:

• Feeling a sense of safety in taking ayahuasca.

• Trusting the providers and facilitators.

• Being prepared to surrender to the experience.

• Approaching the experience with humility.

• Letting go of the urge to control yourself or the journey.

• Recognizing that ayahuasca’s effects can be unpredictable.

• Being open to feeling different than usual.

• Trusting in your own abilities.

• Holding positive intentions for the experience.

• Readying yourself for potential physical effects, such as feeling heavier or lighter, experiencing nausea or vomiting, or feeling flows of energy through your body.

• Understanding that the experience is only temporary; in due time, you will be okay.

We believe meditation is an excellent asset for preparing for the ayahuasca experience, we strongly encourage its practice.

III. AYAHUASCA

Is Ayahuasca dangerous?

Ayahuasca, while often considered safe when used with respect to all safety measures and in individuals without certain health conditions or family history of health issues, can pose risks if these guidelines are not followed. It’s vital to be well-informed and honest about one’s health status before considering its use.

While Ayahuasca is generally not dangerous under controlled, respectful conditions, there are risks. In a minority of cases, Ayahuasca can exarcebate anxiety or depressive symptoms, however temporarily. We believe that such symptoms are actually the sign of a healing in progress. As the medicine tends to uncover traumas and repressed emotions, some participants may find themselves stuck with unprocessed feelings. However, in most cases, participants end up more appeased and in better mental health than beforehand.

IV.HEALTH

Are there any medical considerations or contraindications for ayahuasca?

Yes, there are several medical considerations and contraindications to be aware of when considering ayahuasca. Ayahuasca contains potent psychoactive compounds that can have profound effects on the mind and body. It is important to prioritize safety and ensure that ayahuasca is taken in a suitable and responsible manner. Here are some medical considerations and contraindications to consider:

Mental health conditions: Individuals with a history of severe mental health conditions such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, psychosis, or severe anxiety disorders should generally avoid ayahuasca. The psychedelic experience induced by ayahuasca can potentially exacerbate these conditions or lead to adverse psychological effects.

Medications: Ayahuasca can interact with certain medications, particularly those that affect serotonin levels. It is crucial to avoid combining ayahuasca with medications such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs), or other antidepressants. Combining these substances can result in a dangerous increase in serotonin levels, leading to a condition known as serotonin syndrome. Some herbal supplements or other type of supplements can also affect neurotransmitters in a way that is incompatible with ayahuasca.

Physical health conditions: Individuals with certain physical health conditions, such as heart disease, liver problems, or uncontrolled high blood pressure, should exercise caution with ayahuasca. The plant medicine can affect cardiovascular function and may not be suitable for those with pre-existing health conditions. It is essential to consult with a healthcare professional to evaluate individual risks and determine if ayahuasca is safe to use.

Prescription and recreational drugs: Ayahuasca should not be combined with prescription medications or recreational drugs. There can be potentially dangerous interactions, and it is essential to avoid any substances that may have adverse effects when combined with ayahuasca.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding: The safety of ayahuasca during pregnancy and breastfeeding has not been established, and it is generally advised to avoid its use during these periods. The potential risks to the developing fetus or the infant are not well understood, and caution should be exercised.

Recent surgeries: If an individual has undergone recent surgery, it is advisable to wait until a full recovery before considering ayahuasca. The physical stress and potential interactions with anesthesia and post-surgical medications may pose risks.

Other considerations: It is important to disclose any significant medical history or conditions to the ayahuasca facilitators or healthcare professionals involved in the retreat. They can provide personalized guidance and evaluate the suitability of ayahuasca in each individual case.
